CHARACTER INFO
Character: Xehanort
Canon: Kingdom Hearts (Dark Road ; before Episode 7)
Age: 16-17
Background Information: Wiki Link. Xehanort is taken from before Episode 7 of Dark Road, just before he and his fellow students head off for Olympus.
Personality: Xehanort is the child of destiny.
Or, so he has been told. Taken from his home in Scala ad Caelum as an infant and raised by an elderly guardian in a small beachside shack on Destiny Islands, this young man has had a very unusual upbringing. A prophecy from long, long ago tells of the child of destiny - one hailing from the isles, who has the power to connect to and understand the hearts of others, who is said to defy fate and allow light to prevail over darkness.
He's been told this is him all his life, and he is still not quite sure he believes it.
Through a dark corridor he was ushered, encouraged to find a new life and forge his path forward. Returning to Scala ad Caelum, Xehanort is taken in as an apprentice of the keyblade. Suddenly thrown from the isolated monotony of his home isle into becoming a magic knight with a key sword and a group of wonderful close friends, he is given the first glimmer of hope that his fate might be to become more.
Upon meeting him, Xehanort paints a striking image from first sight. Notably tall, always in his elaborate dark clothing, with silver hair and silver eyes and a stare that seems to look through rather than at you. He's measured in tone, but mostly polite; a dry joke might sneak in to conversation. Not much seems to phase him, but despite the smooth confidence with which he speaks, keener-eyed types may notice a cut of uncertainty to his voice when caught in unfamiliar territory. Talented, well-read and observant, Xehanort will always ask questions more than he will offer answers. But like all cautionary tales, there will eventually come a price to pay for these years of peace.
Xehanort bonds with his new compatriots, finally given the chance to form true connections with the keyblade apprentices he trains alongside; Vor, Hermod, Urd, Bragi, Baldr... and Eraqus, whom he quickly becomes especially close with. The two of them play Alba & Ater, a variant of chess, and discuss all manner of topics in their downtime. The logic and strategy of the game makes Xehanort a natural at it, much to Eraqus's lighthearted frustration. Their classmates often note on the special nature of their friendship. One of Eraqus's dreams is to take the title of Master and explore the worlds - Xehanort, having lived outside Scala, finds this amusing, but ultimately wants to achieve the same thing.
The opportunity to explore worlds outside Scala comes earlier than expected, and under unpleasant circumstances. Nevertheless, Xehanort leaps at the opportunity. Underprepared, barely cognizant of the threats lurking in every world, he and his classmates hop from place to place to try and uncover clues that might lead them to their missing upperclassmen.
Infinitely, dangerously curious, Xehanort thrives on the wealth of new experiences and the thrill of battle. While initially content to simply follow the instructions of his Master, Xehanort defiantly begins to go off-script in order to discover the truth. His sharp instincts lead him down accurate paths to clues, discovering the connections between the creeping presence of darkness and their upperclassmen's disappearance. Partly due to this, he finds himself often leading his group at the prompting of one of his friends. While Xehanort shows that he is a capable leader, he expresses surprise and slight reluctance to initially take that responsibility upon himself.
He rises to the occasion just fine, but always has his friends near to support him. Even when split up, Xehanort remains aware of the dangers and shows concern for the safety of his fellow classmates, their upperclassmen, and even the residents of the new worlds they are visiting.
So, back to that child of destiny thing.
One of this child's prerequisites is the ability to connect with the hearts of others and feel what they feel. Xehanort is an empath, sensitive to the emotions of others. Overwhelming positive and negative emotions are unable to be ignored, the latter even reflected as physical pain. Over the years, Xehanort has taught himself to dampen this ability, as it can be overwhelming.
A result of this sensitivity, however, is the understanding that it is the actions of an individual that decides how others perceive them. He keeps an open mind, which often causes him to get into arguments with Eraqus (though they always quickly reconcile), who was raised with a very literal "light-and-dark" worldview. Xehanort does not believe in that the lesson he'd been taught that light is good and dark is bad - he wants to understand the nuances, and consider every possibility before putting a label on someone.
It's unfortunate how his future will unfold, turning this impartial outlook on its head into some truly horrid hypocrisy.
Because while he is unaware of it, Xehanort harbours the potential for great malice. His exposure to darkness through the dark corridor when he left the Destiny Islands had already begun to affect him. All it might take is a little traumatic push or eleven in the wrong direction. It's so easy for a deep curiosity to mutate into a desire for power. That acceptance of individuality can be manipulated into an intolerance for weakness. His dreams are ever-expanding, hunger for knowledge only just short of violent and voracious. That darkness might consume him.
Perhaps he won't fulfill that destiny, though. This Xehanort is still learning, searching, seeking - but with the warmth of his friends to mellow him. Surely the light cast by their presence has only brightened his future. After all, he's been told he's the child of destiny.
Right?
Abilities & Inventory: His keyblade, the standard keyblade for his class. Keyblades are in-canon everytools; point a keyblade at something that can even vaguely be considered to be in the states of "locked/unlocked" and it'll do whatever you need it to. These abilities will be nerfed here - we're not opening any world keyholes or anyone's heart, but it'll work on normal doors and stuff just fine. Keyblades can be summoned and dismissed by their wielders, and people without the necesary criteria to wield them are unable to handle a keyblade more than momentarily. Xehanort's keyblade can become a set of darkness-warding armour (second from the right) and a glider (unseen, thanks mobile game limitations) for travel.
Despite his status as an apprentice, Xehanort is a talented spellcaster and skilled swordsman. He can utilise the main elements - Fire, Blizzard, Thunder - along with light magic, at a range of levels, though the higher-tier spells exhaust him quickly. He can also cast healing spells.
Additionally, Xehanort is a true empath. His heart is a tuned thing, with strong negative emotions from others even bringing him pain. It can pick up on not only emotions, but can also channel the past experiences of others given prolonged exposure. These memories manifest as dreams.

Personality:
"I never really thought about who I was.
Not until I began to wonder who others were.
Day after day, I spend my time with the same classmates in the same classroom.
The days are peaceful and a little boring,
but they're also familiar and comfortable."

"Even so, my new life is just like the old.
A different world,
but with the same days playing out over and over again.
I left the island behind to come here, and yet..."

"Maybe it's not about the place. Maybe it's about me...
...and how I engage with others. How we influence one another and the world around us.
Maybe that's what shapes our hearts and who we are...
and who we will become."

ARMADA SELECTION
Xehanort will be joining the Paladins. Despite the path he will later take, at present he is content to complete his training and become a defender of light. This lines up more with the general vibe of the Paladins. That said, Xehanort is an open-minded sort with a rebellious streak. Collaborating with Corsairs will come easily to him, particularly in intense or dangerous situations.
